FRONTIERS Visionary Workshop in Thessaloniki

On the 18th of January 2020, a FRONTIERS visionary workshop for Science Teachers of Thessaloniki, Greece, was organized in the premises of Anatolia College.

More than 20 science teachers participated and investigated with members of the FRONTIERS team in Greece the pedagogical framework, educational content and methodology proposed by FRONTIERS to introduce Modern Physics in the Classroom.

The event started with a lecture by Dr. Sofoklis Sotiriou, Director of the R&D department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi regarding the “Messages from the creation of the Universe”. After this, Mr. Manolis Chaniotakis, Physicist and Researcher at the R&D Department of Ellinogermaniki Agogi presented the framework, pedagogical approach and selected educational activities prepared by the FRONTIERS consortium.

The workshop was concluded with a virtual visit to the control room of the VIRGO Gravitational Wave Interferometer in Pisa, Italy, supported by Dr. Valerio Boschi (INFN/VIRGO). Participants had the opportunity to discuss with Dr. B0schi, learn more about the VIRGO interferometer and the methodology of gravitational wave detection and get an authentic experience of the excitement of scientific discovery in one of the most prominent research centers in Europe.

The workshop was organized in the framework of the all-day event: “Astronomy – Space Science and Modern Physics in the School Classroom” , which was organized by the Hellenic Physical Society, Ellinogermaniki Agogi and Anatolia College.
