Astronomy Education Adventure in the Canary Islands 2021 - Online Course

26 - 30 July 2021

The theme of the seventh edition of the international summer course for teachers is “Our home in the Cosmic Ocean”, paying tribute to COSMOS TV series by astrophysicist and science communicator Carl Sagan.

 

The course is organized by IAC – Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias and NUCLIO – Núcleo Interactivo de Astronomia and is carried out in collaboration with the Faulkes Telescope Education Team, the National Schools’ Observatory and the CESAR team (Cooperation through Education in Science and Astronomy Research) in the framework of the IAC PETeR project and of teacher training activities of the European School Innovation Academy (ESIA).

Who can apply?

The course is open to teachers of all grade levels and subject domains willing to dive into a real STEAM experience (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths). We believe that learning improves when students are embedded in interdisciplinary experiences and in environments that seamlessly integrate horizontal (across subject domains) and vertical (across different grade levels) articulation.

It is necessary to register, as the number of places available is limited.

Registration will be open until July 15th, 2021  (or until full capacity is reached) and places will be allocated in strict order of registration.

Preliminary Programme Topics

  • Lectures by researchers on current topics related to our place in the Universe and the Solar System.
  • Innovative Methodologies: Inquiry and project-based learning, interdisciplinary learning, etc.
  • Observing and processing images from robotic telescopes.
  • Digital tools and resources for research in classroom: Stellarium, Salsa J, PeterSoft, etc.
  • Inspecting scientific data collected by ESA space-missions and ground-based facilities.
  • Virtual visits to the IAC Instrumentation area, Teide Observatory, and Roque de los Muchachos Observatory.

Venue

The course will be offered online using videoconference software. A computer with internet connection is required to participate.

Practical Information

The working language will be English. The course duration is 25 hours.

Fees & Funding

The course is financially supported by the organizing and collaborating institutions. A symbolic registration fee of €10 is required to all participants. All funds collected will be donated to the NUCLIO Trust for supporting students from developing countries.
