D.O.M.E Summer School 2023

9-14 July 2023

The D.O.M.E summer school is developed in the context of the project “D.O.M.E: Design your Own Multimedia Learning Environment”. It is designed for teaching professionals in STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). It will introduce teachers to the creation of DIY cardboard planetaria, their pedagogical relevance and will provide a toolkit to support the authoring of their own planetarium shows for their students.  The D.O.M.E  educational material target students from all years of schooling. The project’s aim is to  empower students by involving them in building a low-cost planetarium system and developing presentations that will engage the local community and allow them to benefit from the planetarium and its associated resources. Students will use this opportunity to increase their competence profiles as well as the science capital of their community and the scientific reasoning and awareness of its members.

In the D.O.M.E project and in this course, we have selected as the main topic two of Europe’s major challenges a) Promoting interest and excellence in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and the STEAM approach

And b) Supporting teachers, school leaders and other teaching professions. The D.O.M.E Summer school includes presentations followed by hands on sessions and workshops focusing on:

Αssisting teachers and students so they can become proficient in producing their own educational and artistic contents through dedicated hands on sessions and workshops.

Εmpowering teachers by involving them in building a low-cost planetarium system and developing presentations that will engage the local community and allow them to benefit from the planetarium and its associated resources.

Building on the interest of the participating teachers for Science and the STEAM disciplines, by integrating other disciplines such as arts, the project will promote interdisciplinary collaborations between teachers and students from the same grade level and also across different one, promoting a strong vertical horizontal and diagonal interdisciplinary context.

The overall goal of the D.O.M.E summer school is to empower teachers and enhance their STEAM competences . The D.O.M.E Summer School is specifically designed for teaching professionals in STEM disciplines. It will introduce them to the educational use of DIY cardboard planetaria, teaching them how to construct them using low cost materials and showcasing he tools and methodology to produce their own, curriculum connected, planetarium shows.

The D.O.M.E Summer School is designed to be highly engaging, creative and interactive with an enhanced practical component. Participating teachers will work in small groups and will collaborate with teachers from other countries, in order to construct a fully functional DIY cardboard planetarium as well as create their own planetarium shows for students using dedicated resources and methods provided to them. The course will last for 6 days, consisting in total of 25 hours of workshop-based training, such as presentations followed by hands-on sessions (9 hours of lectures and demonstrations, 16 hours of hands-on workshops). The lectures and the demonstrations of the training courses will be held in an auditorium equipped with a data projector and a laptop, whereas the workshops will be held in a multimedia laboratory where each participant will have direct access to a laptop with internet connection and will carry out planned exercises.

In order to prepare for the summer school, participants will be provided with preparatory educational material uploaded in a dedicated platform.  Through this platform the participants will have access to all materials necessary for their preparation and a common workspace. Moreover, all the information regarding the training course such as the course description, the program, travelling and accommodation guidelines will also be accessible through the website.

At the end of the course, following the presentation of their work on the last day of the course, participants will receive a training certificate that confirms the successful completion of the course. Furthermore, participants will be asked to share their feedback on the quality of the course and educational merit of the proposed approach.

What is ERASMUS+?

Erasmus+ is the European Commission’s Programme for education, training, youth, and sport for the period 2021-2027. As an integrated programme, Erasmus+ offers more opportunities for the mobility of learners and staff and cooperation across the education, training, and youth sectors and is easier to access than its predecessors, with simplified funding rules and a structure that aims to streamline the administration of the programme.

Erasmus+ Key Action 1 (KA1) provides a unique opportunity for teachers, headmasters, trainers, and other staff of educational institutions to participate in international training courses in different European countries. Schools, universities, vocational education and training, and adult education organizations are all eligible to receive full funding to attend courses under a KA1 mobility grant. The Erasmus+ KA1 grant covers all the costs to attend teacher training courses: including travel, subsistence, and course fee.

For up-to-date information about Erasmus+ please check the Programme’s website. Your school will need to apply to your country’s National Agency, who is also the one who will evaluate the proposal. Therefore, your National Agency is also a very good point to start for more information.

Don’t forget to go through the the New Programme Guide and you will have all you need to know.

The steps to apply for an Erasmus+ KA1 School Education Staff Mobility grant are:
