DOTS Summer School 2021

4-9 July 2021

Are you a STEM Teacher seeking to bring innovation to your school and looking to boost your professional development? The DOTS Summer School is focusing on STEM teachers’ transversal skills with an emphasis on methods, materials that would facilitate the transfer of such transversal skills to the students. The DOTS is organised in the framework of the Erasmus + project Development of Transversal Skills.

Pursuing the efficient teaching of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines is a continuous process of skill acquisition. The transition to becoming an effective professional entails much more than knowledge of content. It requires awareness and an effort to develop key professional skills necessary for success in any chosen career path. Transversal skills are personal competences that improve human performance, facilitate effective interactions, complement the technical requirements necessary to acquire and maintain employment. Teachers should play an important role in teaching and cultivating those transversal competences within the teaching of core subjects.

This staff training will offer to teachers the opportunity to acquire techniques for introducing inquiry and research-based teaching within the existing school curriculum. Training will introduce methods that build upon student curiosity about scientific research and matters, while simultaneously developing transversal skills and lateral thinking in students. Teachers will learn how to actively develop and implement teaching approaches to guide students to build their own knowledge and understanding and more importantly empower students with skills which are applicable in everyday professional and personal life regardless of their career choices.

The DOTS Summer Teacher Training is focusing on:

  • Small activities, big impact
  • Building an educational toolbox for your classroom that combines STEAM with a range of transversal skills
  • Using backward teaching scenarios
  • Guidelines for introduction of transversal skills in non-formal education

The DOTS approach is all about helping students develop key transversal skills while studying science (STEM) in formal and informal settings. Our approach is developing recommendations, resources and training opportunities for teachers so they can help their students acquire skills such as creative thinking, communication and problem solving while learning about science.

This website will act as the main hub of communication and for sharing and distributing preparatory material with the participants. Participants will have an open online community for uploading and downloading educational materials.

Before coming to the summer school, participants will be asked to register to the aforementioned online community and review a range of STEAM activities, as well the DOTS approach to transversal skills.

As a follow-up to the training course, the participants will be asked to modify and/or implement the STEAM activities with an emphasis on transversal skills that they co-designed during the summer school. They will also be encouraged to share their work and request feedback.

Participants of the  Summer School will join our network and online community, though which they will be interacting with teachers across Europe sharing ideas and content and forming synergies.

The DOTS Summer School programme will be announced soon.

The Summer School will be held at Golden Coast Hotel & Bungalows, an A-class/ 4-star sea-side hotel which stretches on the golden, sandy beach of the Marathon Bay, near the historic location of Marathon, at the outskirts of Athens.

It is the area of Marathon, that has hosted since the times of myths when Theseus killed the terrible bull of Marathon, to the times of the Persian wars and the Battle of Marathon, further on to our days and the marathon race and Marathon Run, the emblematic symbol of man’s quest for freedom and the will to defend his most noble deeds which constitute the foundations of the Human civilization. The plethora of natural, historical sites and museums of the area reveal in all details this unique historical voyage.

Participants are expected to arrive through the Athens International Airport, approximately 25 km (15,53 miles) distance from the hotel.
