How to Publish a Scientific Article With Your Students
11-16 July 2021
Course participants will have the opportunity to explore the ways they can publish work they have already completed with their students during the school year on the Open Schools Journal for Open Science (OSJ).
OSJ is the first European journal designed to the specifications of a regular journal that is both intended for students and is written by students. It accepts original papers written by students from Primary and Secondary schools across Europe under the mentoring of their Teachers on all aspects of Science, Engineering and Technology. Students and teachers are invited to publish the data and results produced by their school project. Articles are reviewed by scientists and professors and then published on a regular basis. Through this process, students are introduced to the concept of Open Science, data and the value of digital identities, develop critical thinking skills and learn more about the importance of supporting their opinion.
During the course teachers will be trained so that they can support their students for publishing their work. Initially, they will be exposed to the beauty of the methodology of scientific research and the important phases within. The correlations with the inquiry-based learning will also be highlighted in order to encourage teachers to underline the resemblances between their daily routines and the work conducted by the academia. Also, they will have an insight on how the Journal works and they will get familiarized with the phases before publication.
Participants will have to choose between preparing their own ideas to be published in the form of scientific articles or to work on one of the samples prepared by the organisers. They have to work on the content they have based on the official OSJ template. By the end of the course, they will have published a scientific article, but more importantly they will be ready mentors to inspire and guide their students to publish their articles.
This course is mostly addressed to STEM teachers or teachers from other disciplines that are interested to present students’ research work in a disciplinary manner. The course is limited to 15 participants.
Open Schools for Open Science Journal is part of the European OpenAIRE project, co-funded by the European Union.

The course will be divided into four two-hour sessions.
Methodology of Scientific Methodology and the Inquiry Based Approach in Education
Participants will get familiarized with the terms of “scientific research” and the meaning of each phase of research. The presentation of the inquiry based will underline the similarities in the manners the academia and the school work and it will boost the confidence of the participants to complete their own articles by the end of the course.
This is the Open Schools Journal for Open Science!
Participants will be navigated in the Open Schools Journal for Open Science (OSJ) and they will be familiarized with the processes of a scientific Journal. They will be presented the official template and each phase will be explained, so that they can also work individually on the ideas they have selected till the next session.
Time to work together on your article
Participants have worked on the idea they will present in their article and further support will be offered by the moderator regarding the structure or anything that comes up. This will be a teamwork and participants will peer review each other’s articles.
Articles presentation
In this last session participants will present their work and they will share their experience from this course.
All these articles will be published in a Special OSJ issue by Autumn 2021.
This course is designed of STEM teachers who conduct scientific researches in the form of project with their students and they would be happy to be able to publish their students’ work.
Both primary and secondary education teachers can participate. Teachers from other disciplines are more that welcome in case they are planning to follow an interdisciplinary approach.

The Summer School will be held at Golden Coast Hotel & Bungalows, an A-class/ 4-star sea-side hotel which stretches on the golden, sandy beach of the Marathon Bay, near the historic location of Marathon, at the outskirts of Athens.
It is the area of Marathon, that has hosted since the times of myths when Theseus killed the terrible bull of Marathon, to the times of the Persian wars and the Battle of Marathon, further on to our days and the marathon race and Marathon Run, the emblematic symbol of man’s quest for freedom and the will to defend his most noble deeds which constitute the foundations of the Human civilization. The plethora of natural, historical sites and museums of the area reveal in all details this unique historical voyage.
Participants are expected to arrive through the Athens International Airport, approximately 25 km (15,53 miles) distance from the hotel.
