SEISMO-LAB: Creating School Seismology Labs For the Development of Students’

2-7 July 2023

In the SEISMO-LAB Summer School 2023, the participants will be introduced to the basics of seismology and the value of the studying of earthquakes for the science and for the community. Special emphasis will be given to the use of School Study Earthquake Network’s Data in class. This will empower participants to engage in innovative practices through personal and individualized support, in addition to the provision to the suite of supporting tools.

Concurrently, there will be a focus on the accurate presentation of the network of the seismographs along with its functions. All elements will be displayed in detail and participants by the end of this webinar will be able to use the interactive map, to obtain data from each of the stations, to download data (without possessing an instrument) and to follow and monitor the proper function of the network.

Seismology Experts, Pedagogues, Curriculum Developers, Local Authorities, Advanced Educational Applications Developers and Schools joined forces during the project, to design, develop and validate an innovative professional development program for supporting the in-service training of teachers on topics related to Seismology education as a whole school approach. Thus, apart from Seismology, participants will be familiarized with the open schooling approach that provides a powerful framework to engage, discuss and explore how schools can facilitate open, more effective and efficient co-design, co-creation, and use of educational content tools and services for personalized science learning and teaching and for citizens science.

SNAC Teachers will be able to play an important role in integrating seismology in the school curriculum, by engaging parents and affect students attitudes, implementing best practices and tools for professionals working with and for children adapted to their age and stages of development and thus improving the quality of their teaching while endorsing innovative methods and digital integration in teaching.

The participants of the SEISMO-LAB Summer School 2023 will have the opportunity to get familiarized with the ways the Schools Study Earthquakes Network can be exploited in order to serve educational purposes. During the first part, very detailed guidelines for the use of the data obtained from the instruments will be presented. Later, participants will be presented to activities that can very easily implemented in real life conditions and can ideally be included in their routines, e.g. “How to find the Epicenter of an Earthquake”.

Furthermore, the participants will be informed about the Automatic Solutions system which automatically receives data from the installed seismometers of the Schools Study Earthquakes Network and displays them in the map, showing all the important parameters of the occurred earthquake and enabling users to download directly from there the related seismic waveform.

Through the Schools SEISMO-LAB Summer School 2023, teachers will also learn to develop educational projects that are proposing solutions to the needs and challenges of their local communities. At this session, the interest will shift to the citizen science angle behind the network and in the ways, it can work for the society’s interest. The role of students and teachers acting as citizen scientists generating open research data in cooperation with scientists from the field of seismology and the big data will be highlighted. Moreover, participants will be presented educational content, which they can use in class using data from the network. Through such an activity the data provided by the network will return to the community a product that could be essential in case of an earthquake.

Adopting the Design For Change (DFC) Process, a standard four-step process to guide students to develop their projects is proposed:

  • Feel: Students identify problems or challenges in their local communities. Students observe problems and try to engage with those who are affected, discuss their thoughts and ideas of solution in groups, and plan of action, based on scientific evidences.
  • Imagine: Students envision and develop creative solutions that can be replicated easily, reach the maximum number of people, generate long-lasting change, and make a quick impact. They are meeting external actors, they are looking for data to support their ideas and they are proposing a series of solutions.
  • Create: Students are implementing the project and they are interacting with external stakeholders to communicate their findings.
  • Share: Students share their stories through text, photos, video, or slideshows with other schools in the SNAC network and local media.

The scope of the SEISMO-LAB Summer School 2023 is to:

  • Improve teachers’ awareness on seismology & strengthen their professional profile
  • Improve teachers’ professional skills enabling them to integrate seismology and best practices into their lessons
  • Train teachers to use the existing Training Material and the SWARM application
  • Challenge teachers to propose new training material and other resources
  • Familiarize teachers with the Open Schooling Approach, the OSOS Portal and the already existing SNAC Communities in Greece, Turkey, Italy Cyprus and Bulgaria.

Through the SEISMO-LAB Summer School 2023 teachers, curriculum developers, policy makers and educational authorities will:

  • gain knowledge and skills in the design and implementation of innovative multidisciplinary educational activities.
  • become developers of educational content and be able to integrate these innovative practices in their own classes.
  • participate in the development of the specialized courses and the course material and thus acquire skills in conceptualizing, planning and evaluating their didactical approaches and methodology.
  • gain knowledge, skills and experiences in organizing resources, uploading them on the Community of the Seismograph School Network on the OSOS portal (https://www.schoolofthefuture.eu/en/community/schools-study-earthquakes), and facilitate their sharing and exchange with other teachers.
  • gain experience on the use of educational technology in the classroom and provide interesting classroom experiences for their students.
  • gain intercultural awareness through cooperation with partners from different European countries, adding a new dimension to their teaching that will be based on a new culture of sharing.

The teachers will not only be familiarized with a unique collection of open digital educational resources, but they will also be trained to link them with innovative pedagogical practices, such as using real world learning activities, implementing resource based and project-based approaches, in order to design educational scenarios by repurposing existing eLearning tools

After registering to the SEISMO-LAB Summer School 2023, we advise you to follow the subsequent steps:

  1. Register to the OSOS portal (https://www.schoolofthefuture.eu/en/user/register) if you are not already a member.
  2. See the SEISMO-LAB Accelerator on the Open Schools for Open Societies portal
  3. Register to one of the following SEISMO-LAB Communities on the Open Schools for Open Societies portal

During the Summer School, the participating teachers will have the opportunity to design their own lessons, work with the presenters and receive comments and advice on them. Upon completion of the Summer School, as a final work to obtain certification, teachers will be asked to complete their course, creating a presentation.

Therefore, participants are advised to prepare a lesson plan on which they will work during the Summer School. To prepare the course plan:

To help you on this task, we have included in the Programme a series of webinars that include the “Open Schooling Roadmap” and “Building synergies around Europe with common projects”. Using the OSOS portal, we would like you to develop at least one school projects that apply the open schooling approach and exploit the SEISMO-LAB training material.

The SEISMOLAB Communities on the Open Societies Portal

There are already existing SEISMO-LAB Communities on the OSOS portal. During the summer school, you will be asked to use these communities to upload your projects. To become a member of the community, you’ll have to register to the OSOS portal (https://www.schoolofthefuture.eu/en/community/osos-community) if your aren’t already a member.

SEISMO-LAB accelerator

Take ideas by consulting the SEISMO-LAB Accelerator. It will help you to proceed more and develop your innovative ideas to new localised projects that could provide new solutions for the school and its community, for bringing the gap between formal and informal learning settings and creating new opportunities for personalisation at different levels (student, teacher, school). You can also look into the School projects that have already been uploaded on the OSOS portal, there are currently more than 1200.

Developing your project

During the days of the summer school, you will have a chance to receive expert advise and work on your project, apply all the features and tools of the OSOS portal and uptake the role of your students in order to finalise the projects.

 Presenting your project

At the last day of the summer school, you will be called to present your project (acoording to the templates ) and get valuable feedback from the trainers and the participating teachers.
